Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme for girl children under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. Parents can open an SSY account for a girl child until she turns 10. It offers attractive interest (currently 8.2% p.a.) with triple tax benefits (EEE status) and matures when the girl turns 21.
How much can I invest in SSY?
Minimum: ₹250 per year. Maximum: ₹1,50,000 per year. You must deposit at least ₹250 annually to keep the account active. Deposits can be made for 15 years from account opening. After 15 years, no more deposits, but interest continues to accrue until the girl turns 21.
What are the tax benefits of SSY?
SSY has EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status: (1) Deposits qualify for Section 80C deduction (up to ₹1.5 lakh), (2) Interest earned is tax-free, (3) Maturity amount is tax-free. This makes SSY one of the best tax-saving instruments for parents of girl children.
When can I withdraw from SSY?
Partial withdrawal (50% of balance) is allowed after the girl turns 18 for higher education or marriage. Full withdrawal is allowed when she turns 21 (maturity) or upon marriage after age 18. Premature closure is permitted in cases of medical emergency or death of account holder (girl child).
Can I open SSY account for two daughters?
Yes, you can open separate SSY accounts for up to two daughters. If you have twins or triplets as the first birth, you can open three accounts with proof. Each account gets the same benefits (max ₹1.5L deposit/year per account, 80C deduction applies to combined limit of ₹1.5L across all 80C investments).
What if I miss yearly deposits?
The account becomes dormant if you don't deposit the minimum ₹250 in a year. To reactivate, pay ₹50 penalty for each default year plus the minimum deposit for those years. Interest continues to accrue during dormancy but at post office savings rate (lower than SSY rate) until reactivated.
